Shield
The shield is made of relatively soft wood and has a recessed handle on the back of the shield boss. The painting shows stylized faces as well as highly abstract depictions of birds on both sides of the boss. A braid or wrapping with rattan strips also serves to strengthen the shield. The Linden
Museum received this shield in 1901 as a gift from Rudolf von Bennigsen
(1859-1912). Bennigsen was the first governor of the colony of German
New Guinea from 1899-1901. The previous acquisition history of this
