The leaves of the Pandanus tree (pandanus tectorius) constituted one of the most important raw materials on the Marshall Islands and were used, for example, to make dress mats, mats for sleeping, sails and the roofing. This artefact is a piece of an unfinished sailing mat that Antonie Brandeis shipped back for illustrative purposes. Many of the artefacts contained in her first shipment in April 1900 have a connection to traditional handcraft techniques, such as the woven mats. Mats and sails were composed of strips of woven pandanus leaves. Antonie Brandeis also photographically documented this handcraft, which was generally undertaken by women.

The provenance of this object is unclear. It has no old inventory number. According to the New Inventory Book, part of the Brandeis donation, according to the index card from 1970, acquisition unclear. However, the object very probably corresponds to object no. 64 (object list Antonie Brandeis, 1st consignment April 1900, SAF D.Sm 35/1): "A piece of sailing mat. Wudjila. Pandanus leaves". Additional comment: "Sails are assembled from strips of mat. Photograph no. 18 shows a woman weaving such strips of sails. She is holding a piece of wood on her knees No. 63 and the mat strip is shown in No. 64." (in: "Bemerkungen zu den dem Museum zu Freiburg /B. übersandten ethnologischen Gegenständen aus den Marshallinseln. South Seas". SAF D.Sm 35/1).
