"We can beat our rivals at draughts a thousand times a day." The game of chess, draughts and the African game of owar are a metaphor for war. The clock is a symbol of prestige and power. With the arrival of the Europeans, time took on a new meaning. It was now subdivided according to the rituals of changing of the guard, cannon salutes and bell ringing, as well as being measured with clocks. Whoever was able to control time also controlled people. Thus, time became equated with power and the clock used to measure time thus became a symbol of power. The time o'clock could indicate an imminent conflict, for which the company was invariably ready and prepared. Author: Doris Kubisch
