The Wuppertal textiles from what is now Indonesia came from Eduard von der Heydt, who gave them to the Städtisches Museum Wuppertal in 1937. The museum bought them from the art dealer Carel van Lier in Amsterdam. They were originally part of the curated collection of the German-Jewish banker Georg Tillmann, who lived in Amsterdam from 1932. Of the original 80 textiles, 68 have survived to this day, including fabrics from the islands of Java, Sumatra, Timor, Borneo and Bali in ikat, songket or batik techniques. Most of the pieces were created in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when what is now Indonesia was under Dutch colonial rule.

Shawl that was worn by aristocratic men as a shoulder scarf on special occasions.
Hand-woven cloth composed of three panels with decorative seams. The narrow, white-ground centre panel of plain-weave, warp-faced cotton fabric is interwoven with fine warp stripes and patterned stripes, into which a complex, polychrome diamond pattern of the buna type is woven. Two rows of a blue and white puah kebi patterned stripe, which is twisted in, form the beginning and end of the stripe. The two wide, identical border stripes of rust-red cotton fabric are decorated with warp pattern stripes of different widths made of double-guided (= two-coloured), floating warp. This equally complex weaving technique is known as the sotis or lotis type. The weave ends are formed by untwisted warp fringes. The cloth has a curved shape due to the weaving technique.
