Bowl

There were different forms of eating bowls on the Admiralty Islands. Ordinary bowls intended for everyday use were made in the interior of the main island of Manus using a very special technique and then traded from there. A coating of so-called parinarium putty is attached over a wicker mould. The putty is extracted from the soft interior of the fruit from the parinarium tree. Knowledge of this technique is still alive today. This bowl, as well as other objects in the Oceania collection, was collected by Wilhelm Lebahn, captain of the Imperial Navy survey ship »S.M.S. Planet«, on which the ethnologist, anthropologist and marine doctor Augustin Krämer was also travelling. The Lebahn collection was sold after his death by his brother-in-law Dr. Rudolf Plähn from Waldkirch.
