Hooks from the Sepik region in New Guinea had a dual function - on the one hand they were everyday objects upon which items with protective powers or food could be suspended. On the other, they were also highly-prized representations of spirits or clan ancestors, which were kept in the men's house in the village and had proper names. This fully sculpted figure displays the scarifications of initiated men in the abdominal region and on the shoulders, as well as sumptuous painting, thereby embodying an important person.Although Sepik hook figures are not rare, this specimen well wrought and in excellent condition.It was acquired in 1926 along with sixty-five other pieces from New Guinea, including more hook figures of a similar quality by the collector and dealer, Arthur Speyer.
