1895 und 1898 war er mit dem Arzt Karl Ernst Ranke auf Expeditionen in Brasilien am Rio Xingu bei die Xingu-Indianern. Sie forschten zu Anthropologie und Botanik. Später wurde er Assistent am Museum für Völkerkunde zu Leipzig. 1898 siedelte er Deutsche in Rio Grande do Sul an. Er gründete die Kolonie Neu-Württemberg (seit 1945 Panambi mit 38.000 Einwohnern). Während des Ersten Weltkrieges war er Konsul Brasiliens in Leipzig. 1903 wurde Hermann Meyer Teilhaber des Bibliographischen Institutes in Leipzig und arbeitete mit seinem Bruder Hans Meyer, ebenfalls Forschungsreisender, zusammen. Ab 1915 Vorstandsmitglied.
