Lehrte er als außerordentlicher Professor der Botanik an der Landwirtschaftlichen Lehranstalt in Berlin, wo er 1865 ein physiologisches Laboratorium begründete. 1868-1872 war er Professor für Pflanzenphysiologie an die Universität Wien. 1872 verließ er Wien und lebte als Privatgelehrter in Basel und später in Berlin.
