Grave guard

Crouching human figure made of soapstone. The left arm is in front of the chest, holding a blanket in its hand across the right shoulder. The eyes and the cap are painted black. Such Mintadi figures, tomb guards, of the Bakongo people from the Boma region in the present Democratic Republic of Congo were produced up until the 1920s as a sign of the deceased's wealth.
