companions. The rider is interpreted as King Esigie (ca. 1505 - 1550),
who maintained close relations with Portugal. As Portuguese
Portuguese gifts, horses also came to the court of Benin. The proportions of the
horse and the rider sitting on the side of it, as well as those of the
accompanying figures are not based on reality, but on the significance of the
depicted.
