Face mask of a village ecpo federation

The Ekpo men's society formed a counterweight to royal authority in the countryside. It was banned in the capital, but received gifts from the king for its ceremonies. Members of the federation were divided into three age groups. They performed dancing with such face masks to spiritually cleanse the village of diseases that could result from witchcraft or neglect of the rituals at the altars for ancestors, spirits and gods. Text: Dietmar Neitzke.
