Altar bell

These bells stood on the altars in the courtyards of the royal palace and sounded at the beginning of ceremonies in honor of the ancestors. And they were worn around the neck of soldiers, as amulets and badges of rank. They have been recorded in southern Nigeria since the 9th century, and in the 16th century they were exported as far as England. At the same time, the royal court imported other bells from Europe. Text: Dietmar Neitzke.
