Royal commission to the Guild of Ivory Carvers in the Benin Kingdom in the 18th century or 19th century, probably as part of a royal memorial altar; by inheritance to Oba Ovonramwen (ca. 1857-1914; r. 1888-97), Royal Palace, Benin City; looted in connection with the British conquest of Benin, 1897; auctioned by the firm of Hale & Son, 1897; purchased at auction by the Royal Museum of Ethnology, 1897.
