Object II/0647 corresponds to object no. 51 of the second Brandeis consignment of November 1901 with the old inventory number 2171. Entry on the object list (SAF C3/241/2): "Kanoe model. Breadfruit wood. Worked by a chief. Little house for sleeping. Sail is protected against rain with a mat".
This is a model of a seaworthy travelling boat. In her commentary on the first consignment from 1900, the collector mentions that she had "ordered" the model of such a boat, i.e. most probably commissioned it (for a fee?) ("Bemerkungen zu den dem Museum zu Freiburg /B. übersandten ethnologischen Gegenständen aus den Marshallinseln. South Seas". SAF D.Sm 35/1). Unfortunately, it is not known by whom it was made.
