The life-size plaster figurine "Male figure of a native" from the "Island of Naura [sic]" (old inventory, no. 3823) was made by the Freiburg sculptor August Müßle and purchased by the Museum of Natural History and Ethnology on 14 February 1905 for 110 marks. According to the "Freiburger Tagblatt" of 19 February 1907, Müßle was advised on the design by Ludwig Kaiser, the then district administrator of the German colony of Nauru, who came from the southern Black Forest and visited the museum during a visit home in 1905. Kaiser also collected the artefacts from Nauru, which were donated to the museum as part of the Brandeis collection in 1900/1901. The figurine was dressed in a coconut fibre armour from Nauru, which it still wears today. The status of the figurine was unclear, but in the course of provenance research on the Brandeis collection in 2020-2022, it was identified as being present but damaged.
