Traces of leather covering are recognisable on the wood, particularly at the beginning of the conical widening. Wedges for fixing a longitudinal crack can be seen between the seven frontal finger holes. A sheet metal sleeve wrapped in strips of linen with a wooden lip disc and slender reed was attached to the tip. Attached were a replacement mouthpiece and a wooden spike for pressing on the mouthpieces. This is a very old example of a surnā(y), also known as a sorna or sornai. In Afghanistan, the cone oboe is usually played by village or nomadic population groups in an ensemble with the double skin drum dohol at weddings, births or other ceremonies.
