It is a woodwind instrument with a double reed made of light-coloured wood. Known as the balamán, it is played in Azerbaijan, but also in northern Iran and north-east Iraq. The balamán is primarily an ensemble instrument: the master (usta) blows the melody and the apprentice (dankesh) the drone.
