Codex-style ceramic vessel ("Dynastic vase") from Calakmul. Outer wall completely inscribed with hieroglyphics. Maya, Late Classic period (650-750 AD) This vase is inscribed exclusively with texts relating to the accession of kings to the throne. Only 12 such dynastic vases have been found to date. All of these vases represent lists of the Kaan dynasty, which ruled in El Mirador, Dzibanche and Calakmul. Of the 19 known rulers of the Kaan dynasty, only 10 are depicted on this vase. Remarkably, the enthronement dates on the different vases do not match. According to Simon Martin, not even the successions of rulers match. The reason for this is still not known.
