Kalebassen sind in den
Gesellschaften des (südlichen) Afrika allgegenwärtig. Ihre Provenienz
lässt sich daher nur schwer einer bestimmten Bevölkerungsgruppe
zuordnen, besonders wenn sie keine charakteristischen Schnitzereien,
Farben usw. aufweisen. Generell stehen Kalebassen für eine der
grundlegendsten künstlerischen Ideen der Menschheit. Auch wenn sich
einige ihrer Verwendungszwecke im Laufe der Zeit geändert haben, dienen
sie auch heute noch zum Sammeln, Transportieren und Aufbewahren von
Wasser sowie von pulverisierten oder getrockneten Materialien, die für
verschiedene Zwecke wie zur Heilung, für Rituale oder zur Ernährung
dienen. Wie die Kordel und vielleicht auch der Deckel dieser Kalebasse
verraten, wurde das Gefäß zum Transportieren von Inhalten verwendet,
indem es entweder über einen Stock gehängt wurde, wie es die Hirten tun,
oder an einem Tier festgebunden bzw. einfach in der Hand gehalten wurde.
Dieses Gefäß kann gekauft, verschenkt oder selbst hergestellt
werden.
Der Sammler Otto Simon war von 1891-1897 als
Münzmeister in Pretoria, in der damaligen Südafrikanischen Republik
(auch: Transvaal-Republik) tätig. Es ist davon auszugehen, dass er
dieses und weitere Objekte dort unter bisher ungeklärten Umständen
sammelte und mit nach Reichenbach brachte. Alle Objekte aus der Sammlung
Simon sind weiterhin als sensibel
einzuordnen.
