Woman´s dress

The skirts worn by the women of Palau were made from barkcloth obtained from plants belonging to the mallow family, such as hibiscus. They were made from two pinafores that were then knotted together. Up until colonisation, natural plant dyes, such as turmeric, were used for colouring. These were replaced by artificial aniline colours and later yarn was introduced into the manufacture of the pinafores.
