Hat

Antonie Brandeis’ Nauru collection contains numerous hats, which are worn during dances. While the majority of these are tall and pointed (II/1419 oder II/1420), this artefact resembles a type of visor made from tortoiseshell, held together with two bamboo hoops. The outer edge has been embellished with a light, black strip of rattan, as well as numerous small pieces of shell and a feather. According to the collector, the visor was turned forward while dancing.
