Shaman drum

A slightly oval wooden frame is covered with a leather membrane on one side. On the inside, leather straps are attached to the frame in a criss-cross pattern. They hold two brass rings in the centre. A rod rattle with 9 perforated brass coins is also attached to the inside edge. These are predominantly labelled with 4 Chinese characters each, with Manjur inscriptions on the reverse. This drum is part of an existing shaman's equipment (cf. inv. no. I A 4400 f). Walther Stötzner acquired it around 1928 for the Berlin museum during his 4th East Asian research trip. - Publ.: Oppitz, Michael: Trommeln der Schamanen, Zurich (Völkerkundemuseum der Universität), 2007, p. 31 (commentary by Siegmar Nahser, 2008). File card music ethnics: membranophone, single-headed frame drum (shaman drum)
