This basket comes from the collection of the Museum Godeffroy in Hamburg, which was dissolved in 1885. The museum preserved objects which captains and explorers of the trading company "Joh. Ces. Godeffroy & Sohn" had been bringing or sending back to Hamburg mainly from the South Seas since 1861. The provenance of the basket before its arrival at the Museum Godeffroy is currently not known.
