A door hinge from China consisting of a hinge in the centre and two symmetrical fittings on the sides. The door fitting has a hexagonal basic shape. The edges are wavy. The door fitting has six holes for fastening and is decorated on both sides with a dragon motif and other smaller decorative elements. The head and tail of the two dragons are reversed in relation to each other. The two sides can be folded together using the hinge. Chinese characters are engraved on the back of both sides.
The door hinge is made of bronze and painted black. However, remnants of gold leaf can be recognised. The bronze fittings were probably originally oil-gilt and were later painted over in monochrome black.
The object was donated by the military hospital inspector Jakob Keidel to the Gewerbemuseum Ulm in 1919.
Keidel was stationed in the Tianjin (Tientsin) field hospital from 1900/1901 with the garrison of the East Asian Expeditionary Corps, from 1901 the East Asian Occupation Brigade, and was thus involved in the military operations of the German Empire in the Boxer War. During his two-year stay in China, he collected various objects, including Chinese clothing and tools or bullets from the context of the fighting. He acquired the objects by purchasing them from Chinese traders or as gifts, among other things. He donated or loaned a selection from his collection to the Gewerbemuseum Ulm in several stages.
Keidel bought the present door hinge from a Chinese dealer, according to whom it is said to have come from a side door of the Xiannongtan altar in Beijing.
