Round-bottomed, neckless jug with retracting wall. The object has a steep rim. It is smoothed and slurried on both sides. The outside of the ceramic was primed, painted and polished. The paint and primer are slightly eroded. The pottery has a brown base colour, which was painted black-brown and red on the outside of the vessel. The body is decorated with an upright, circumferential frieze that alternates between trapezoidal pictorial fields and concentric circles. The trapezoidal sectors have diagonal bundles of lines that imitate textile or wickerwork. The body also features a central, circumferential motif band showing two intertwined wavy lines (guilloche motif). Both friezes are bordered by horizontal, all-round black-brown bands. A black-brown band runs along both sides of the rim of the vessel. Symbolic meaning: the guilloche motif is often interpreted as two serpent's bodies intertwined (Ferrero 1975: 405). According to Lothrop 1926: Nicoya black line ware. Cultural significance: the type has been documented in burials. Its mould inventory comprises only jugs. The guilloche motif is considered a diagnostic indicator for the late phase of the Policromo Medio (1350-800d.C.). It occurs above all in the groups Gillén Negro sobre Café Claro, Papagayo Policromo (1350-800d.C.), Jicote Policromo (1350-1000d.C.) and Mora Policromo, variedad Guabal (1200-800d.C.). (Künne 2004)
