According to the camp officer Robert Beirer, this smoke pipe is said to have belonged to a man named Ranga. Ranga had been accused by German colonial officials of murdering two German expedition members. After his arrest, he fled from prison and was killed by local residents while on the run. Beirer did not explain in his letters how he came into possession of the smoke pipe.
