The motif belongs to the depiction of the legend of the theft of clothes. God Krishna sees the shepherdesses bathing in the river Yamuna and steals their clothes. This painting depicts the situation either before or after the robbery. Characteristic of the paintings from the Shekhavati region are the multiple draperies in strong colours (green, red) at the upper edge of the picture. Acquired in Ramgarh; especially in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the havelis of wealthy merchant families with corresponding needs were located in this area. Note: reverse glass painting in Germany The reverse glass painter Rambold (1872-1953) taught the artists of the Blue Rider how to paint behind glass. On his easel was a reverse glass painting with an Indian motif. Only one photo of it still exists. It is unclear whether he painted it himself or acquired it somewhere. Information from Mr L. Feiler, 23.7.08
