Short lance with a red, round wooden shaft and an attached metal tip. A pennant with Chinese characters is attached around the shaft. The lettering runs along the shaft. In the centre are large characters with a red seal imprint.
The flag is a command pennant that originated in the late 19th century. Such pennants were used in Chinese warfare to convey instructions.
The lettering on the shaft reads: "Commander of Central Infantry Company 481, Captain Wu, rank 4[a], to be promoted soon, for the time being to old post."
The pennant is glued to the shaft the wrong way round; the tip of the lance should actually point in the same direction as the "roof" of the large inscription. It is therefore possible that the pennant was (re)glued on later. It has not yet been established whether the lance is a Chinese original or an imitation/prop.
