This textile was once a cloak of a religious dignitary of the Nazca culture, who was very likely also the political leader of a group. It seems to be unique worldwide, with no known parallel piece. There are different interpretations for the scene depicted, which in turn shows how little we know about these cultures that did not keep written records. Everything is an interpretation and no more than a suggestion, which hopefully can be confirmed at a later date by sound scientific excavation. One interpretation suggests interpreting the scene as a human sacrifice. The mountain-like figure would be the "fat reaper", a mythical figure indicating good or bad harvests ("emaciated reaper"). Or at the beginning or end of the harvest. At the foot of the "fat reaper", a human sacrifice takes place to ensure fertility, that is, the rain in the Andes. One could also interpret the large figure as a mountain deity. Another suggestion is that this is a mythological scene that refers to ancestor worship and female fertility. The large figure is interpreted here as a mummy bundle and the scene in front of it as a woman giving birth to a child. What all these very different interpretations have in common is that it is a fertility ritual of one kind or another.
