Three-legged bowl with slightly overhanging rim and flat base. There are rattle balls in the hollow legs. The object has been smoothed on both sides, slurried, primed and painted. The primer and paint are partially eroded. The base of the vessel is cracked. The ceramic has a white base colour, which was painted black-brown and red. On the outside of the bowl wall is a high frieze depicting three feathered snakes. Below this is a deep sequence of images depicting the same motifs in a highly stylised manner. The inside of the wall depicts the same friezes in a different position. The floor is decorated with a feathered serpent. The outside remains unpainted. The vessel legs show a zoomorphic, figurative decoration. Social significance: similar vessels (malcajetes) from the same group have a cross-grid cut into the base and used for grinding peppers (Lothrop 1926: 214). According to Lehmann 1913: "Chorotega style". According to Lothrop 1926: Managua ware. Cultural significance: the objects of the Managua Policromo group often have Mesoamerican ornamentation, which Haberland (1975) associates with the Nicarao due to their crude execution. Vessel forms, decoration and colour combinations are related to the Nimbalari Tricromo type (1350-1520d.C.) described by Lowe (1959, figs. 11, 12) and Navarrete (1966: 53-56, figs. 32-39) for the Central Lowlands of Chiapas (México).
