Mask
The exact usage contexts of wooden hooded masks from the Witu Islands are not known. However, it was surmised that these masks appeared during funeral ceremonies. The design of the traditional masks follows relatively strict conventions, with the elongated eye areas in blue being particularly striking. While the facial side of the mask has been given only little plasticity, the reverse side is decorated with carvings and an abstract painting. Text: Ulrich Menter
