A flat, elongated bowl with a broad, almost flat base and broader, outwardly sloping narrow edges; the bowl and opening outline [is] rounded there (type A). Seven V-shaped string slots in each case. Seven strings. One stringing [is] preserved. One end of the string is tied to a crosspiece under an outer slit. A crack in the bottom of the bowl [is] sewn. No bridges preserved. [There are] seven bottom perforations in the corners (round) and in the centre line (square). [Existing] branding on the longitudinal rims in and on the underside of the bowl. A streaky red colouring on the bottom of the shell. e.g. Kirundi: 'nanga', the intestinal strings: 'nauria', the incisions at the ends: 'mano', the small pieces of wood underneath to tighten the strings: 'kissekulu ya muria', the incision holes: 'us- snre'. from Ulrich Wegner: African Stringed Instruments, Staatliche Museen Berlin - SPK, 1984 (Appendix Object Catalogue)
