Small, round-bottomed jug with a high, conical neck. The object has a reinforced rim with a broad, flattened lip. There are two opposing, superimposed faces on the body. The pottery has been smoothed and slipped. Its exterior is primed, incised and highly polished. There are small flakes on the rim and neck. The vessel has a black-brown base colour. The bulbous body is decorated with two coarse, anthropomorphic faces with attached (ears, eyes, nose, mouth) and indented attributes. According to Bransford (1881): black ware. Lothrop (1926) treats the same group in the chapters chocolate ware and black ware. According to Haberland (1971f) "olla con cuello cónico." Cultural significance: Haberland documented similar objects at the Los Angeles site (Ometepe Island, Nicaragua) in 1962/63, for which he distinguishes three varieties (Haberland 1971f.). All the ceramics he classified were associated with the El Gato phase (1200-1000d.C.). Bransford (1881) and Lothrop (1926) discuss the same objects under both the chocolate-brown ware and the black ware reported by Oviedo, Castañeda and López de Velasco from the island of Chira (Gulf of Nicoya) (Lothrop 1926: 40, 227-36). Snarskis (1981: 198, photo 113) and Bonilla et al. (1987: 313-17) identify similar ceramics with the Cuello Aplicado (1520-1350d.C.) and Murillo Aplicado (1520-1350d.C.) types, which occur mainly in the southern sector of the Gran Nicoya region.
