Provenance
Purchased from auction house owner Rudolf Bangel in Frankfurt on 16/04/1903
The drum comes from the collection of the Belgian captain Charles de la Kethulle de Ryhove (1865-1903). He acquired the drum during the Belgian colonial period (1885-1960) in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. On behalf of King Leopold II, he took part in the so-called Congo expeditions from 1890 to 1894 and from 1895 to 1898. Their aim was to conquer further regions militarily in order to expand the Belgian colonial empire. De la Kethulle brought the drum with him on his return to Belgium in 1889. The exact circumstances of its acquisition are not known.
