Three-footed jug in the shape of a seated monkey wearing a black eye mask. The object has a short neck with a protruding rim and rounded lip. Applied decorations appear on the body. The outside of the vessel has been smoothed, slurried, primed, painted and highly polished. The rim has small fractures. The pottery has a red base colour, which was painted white-yellowish and black. The seated, zoomorphic creature draws both arms and legs towards its body. It appears to be leaning back. The figure's tail is raised on the back of the vessel. The attached decoration is connected to the base of the vessel. The interior of the object remains undecorated apart from the polished and polished neck. According to Lehmann 1913: El Viejo style. Cultural significance: although the Tola Tricromo group is considered a diagnostic indicator of the Policromo Antiguo (800-500d.C.), Bonilla et al. (1987) date it to the period of zoned bicoloured pottery. The Costa Rican variant López has been documented above all in the Bahía de Culebra and in the valley of the Río Tempisque. It appears to have originated from the Rosales Esgrafiado en zonas group (500d.C.-500a.C.). The Nicaraguan variant Tola has many similarities with the Chávez Blanco sobre Rojo group (800-500d.C.). The object belongs to a long tradition of masked figures and is related to the Chavez Blanco sobre Rojo type (800-500d.C.). (Künne 2004)
