For the Dogon, their well-being and that of their country are closely linked to the favour of both their actual and their mythical ancestors. They are therefore revered as the bringers of blessings. The male figure is the symbol of the mythical ancestor Nommo, who once brought order into the world. His arms are stretched towards the heavens in a gesture of supplication and symbolically connect the worldly and the supernatural.
