Devastating storm surges, the perpetual battle with the forces of nature - in the Nordfriesland Museum, original objects, historical models and interactive stations show the eventful history and fascinating beauty of this unique landscape. Coastal protection, dyke construction, life on the North Frisian islands and Halligen are the themes of a varied exhibition for visitors of all generations.
Another part of the exhibition is dedicated to the Husum emigrant and benefactor Ludwig Nissen (1855-1924), who once founded the museum with his extensive art collection. Nissen emigrated to New York in 1872 at the age of sixteen. After initial professional failures, he eventually entered the international pearl and diamond business and became one of the most successful men among New York's business elite. In his will, he left his fortune and his collection of American art to his home town of Husum.
The museum also owns a large collection of works by artists from Schleswig-Holstein from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, which are presented in changing exhibitions.
