As one of 19 castles, palaces and gardens, Rochlitz Castle is part of the Staatliche Schlösser, Burgen und Gärten Sachsen gGmbH. As a grown castle museum, it maintains a collection that goes back to the collecting activities of one of the early museums founded in Saxon castles and palaces in the late 19th century.
The relatively small collection of ethnological objects is a thematic exception to the otherwise regional history-orientated collection at Rochlitz Castle. As part of the estate of the military doctor Dr Georg Wilke (born in Dresden in 1859 and died in Rochlitz in 1938), the objects initially came to the Rochlitz secondary school. In the 1960s, the inventory was transferred to the collection of the then local history museum in Rochlitz Castle. There is no further documentation with information on the provenance of the objects. A large part of the collection presumably originates from colonial contexts. The collection of 83 objects was deliberately published as a closed object estate.
